Forensic Conference / ACFEI membership links.

February 18, 2009 – 10:36 am

ACFEI was founded and run by my friend Dr. Robert O’Block. I think you will find a warm reception with the forensic experts and Mr. O’Block as a member and a attendee at the conference.  It is my intention to attend, so I hope to meet you and spend time with you there, at the conference in Las Vegas.  Note:  This ACFEI conference is not the same weekend or even the same month as the Handwriting University Conference, so they are in no-way related or cross promoted.

CSI of the Mind

Presenter: Barbara R. Kirwin, PhD

Barbara Kirwin

People have always been interested in crime and the dark side of the human psyche. With the popularity of TV shows like CSI and Law & Order, the interest in the field of forensics has exploded. As a former Narcotics Parole Officer turned forensic psychologist, the presenter’s real life takes her into the intersection of these fictional worlds, and she has experienced things that are beyond what Dick Wolfe could dream up in any of his shows.

As a forensic psychologist, Dr. Kirwin’s job is to get inside the mind of defendants and analyze their thoughts, motives, and state of mind at the precise moment they committed their crime.  On CSI they perform physical autopsies.  Dr. Kirwin conducts psychological autopsies of the tortured and demented minds of serial killers, murderers, rapists, mothers who kill their children, and others who commit bizarre and senselessly violent crimes. While the crime scene investigators use forensic science to determine after the fact who did what, when, and where, the forensic psychologist must answer the question of why they did it and whether or not they are insane and should be acquitted of their crime.

Criminal investigation has evolved to become a team approach where many scientific specialists contribute their expertise.  In this lecture, Dr. Kirwin will walk participants through typical cases where a forensic psychologist interacts with experts in the fields of DNA, blood spatter, ballistics and handwriting analysis, toxicology, polygraphing, and even soil and weather analysis to construct a profile of the mind behind the crime.  The day of the forensic psychologist relying on ink blot cards is over.  The forensic psychologist may also be called upon to predict future dangerous behavior and potential for recidivism.  In the past, psychologists’ involvement began after the handcuffs were on– now they can assist at every step of the investigation.

In this presentation, Dr. Kirwin will discuss the expanded role of forensic psychology in criminal investigation the science it can contribute, and the myths and surprising realities it has uncovered behind the minds of criminals.

Barbara R. Kirwin, PhD, is a forensic psychologist who has testified for both the prosecution and defense in numerous high-profile cases. She has lectured, published research on malingering in forensic assessments, and taught forensic science at Adelphi University.
